OPX15 - REST API for Operators

Automic can do more than just display workflows in AWI: Using REST, you can query executions, start objects, and integrate external services into automations. In OPX15, you’ll read JSON responses, track RunIDs and user contexts, and observe how a Festival workflow processes current weather data. Finally, you’ll examine a runtime action and verify the result in AWI—with a special focus on permissions and the secure handling of access credentials.

Practical use of the Automic REST API for Operators

External applications can access the Automation Engine via the AE REST API. Depending on the permissions of the logged-in user, they can monitor Automic data or trigger shared runtime actions.

As a REST client, Automic can call external or internal company REST APIs from within workflows. The native approach uses a REST-Job, CONN-Objekt and REST-Agent.

In this practical Operator-Expert course you will learn, from an operator's perspective, what possibilities both directions offer and how they look in practice. You will work with machine-readable JSON, Process Monitoring and a real REST-Agent. A festival scenario combines understandable tasks with safe runtime actions.

In this Automic REST API Lab you will learn:

  • To read objects and executions via GET-Request from the AE REST API.

  • To find RunID, status, user and timestamps in JSON responses.

  • To interpret HTTP status codes like 400, 401, 403, 404 and 500 as an operator.

  • To trace a REST-started execution in Automic Process Monitoring.

  • To check the user context and the permissions of an AE-REST-Request.

  • To retrieve current data from an external API using an Automic REST-Job.

  • To apply and control a shared runtime action on a blocked workflow.
