Solution Corner #36: Workshop Designer Challenges #3 (Recording)

Where does a variable’s value come from, and why does it suddenly disappear in the post-process? In the third “Designer Challenges” workshop, we’ll break down Automic’s variables—interactively and live in the lab: script variables versus object variables; what distinguishes :RSET, :PSET, and :PUBLISH; how a task’s generation time determines which values it inherits; what the inheritance setting “all, only defined, or no variables” does; why PromptSet variables are read-only; and which command retains the old or new value upon restart. We’ll also take a look at the activation report, which reveals which command set a variable.

Understanding Automic Variables and Inheritance: Workshop Designer Challenges #3

Where does a variable get its value in Automic? Why does it suddenly disappear in the post-process? And how can variables be passed between tasks within a workflow? In the third edition of Workshop Designer Challenges, we explore one of the most important aspects of Automic Scripting: variables and inheritance. In this interactive session, we use practical examples to explain the differences between script variables and object variables, when their values are available and how their scope can be controlled. Special attention is given to the Automic Script functions :RSET, :PSET and :PUBLISH and their behavior within workflows.

Script Variables, Object Variables and Inheritance in Automic

Variables are essential when designing Automic Jobs and Workflows. However, understanding exactly when a variable is created, how long its value remains available and which subsequent tasks can access it is not always straightforward. In this webinar recording, we explain how variables behave across the pre-process, process and post-process sections and how object variables are stored in the Automic database as part of an execution. We also explore the importance of task generation time and why generating a task at activation time or at runtime can make a significant difference when inheriting variable values.

What You Will Learn in This Webinar

  • Script Variables vs. Object Variables: Understand the differences in scope, lifetime and persistence
  • Pre-Process, Process and Post-Process: Learn when variables are available and why certain values disappear in the post-process
  • :RSET, :PSET and :PUBLISH: Discover how to register object variables, pass values to parent workflows and explicitly control their scope
  • Variable Inheritance: Understand how tasks can inherit all, only defined or no variables from their parent workflow
  • Task Generation Time: Explore how generation at activation time versus runtime affects inherited values
  • PromptSet Variables: Learn why PromptSet variables are read-only on the task where they are attached and how they behave in child tasks
  • Restart Behavior: Understand why :RSET preserves the original value while :PSET can use a new value during a restart
  • Activation Report: Find out how to trace the origin of object variables and identify which script function created them

Automic Scripting in Practice: Managing Variables Across Workflows

Variable handling becomes particularly interesting when values need to be shared between multiple tasks in a workflow. Through practical examples, we demonstrate how :PSET can pass variables to parent workflows and how :PUBLISH provides additional flexibility through the TASK, WORKFLOW and TOP scopes. We also address common challenges and troubleshooting scenarios: What happens to variables during a restart? Why does a task receive an unexpected value? And how can the activation report help identify where a variable originated? This Solution Corner recording is ideal for Automic Designers and Developers who want to strengthen their Automic Scripting skills, gain a better understanding of variable inheritance and avoid common pitfalls when working with variables in complex workflows.
