V24 from Broadcom brings with it numerous changes that are noticeable on both a technical and functional level. In this tutorial, we will give you an overview of the most important aspects and changes so that you are optimally prepared for the upgrade.

Changes to the release policy and versioning

With V24, Broadcom has not only adapted the release policy, but also the numbering of the versions. The versions are made up of the major version, minor version, service pack and hotfix. Each major version will now have a support life cycle of 5 years, and a new major release will be published every 21-24 months. Minor releases may contain some new features, but no major changes to the architecture. Service packs and hotfixes only provide bug fixes and optimisations.

Technical innovations in V24

The most outstanding technical change in V24 is the introduction of UTF-8 support for Unicode. This feature has already been covered in detail in videos and webinars and offers a new dimension for the use of character strings. If you have missed this information, we recommend that you read the Prepare-4-V24 learning path which covers this content. However, some familiar components have not made it into V24. These include the Event Engine and the Infrastructure Manager.

Compatibility changes and highlights

There are also some changes in the compatibility matrix. Support for Java 1.8 has been discontinued and all components now support OpenJDK 17. Operating systems such as RHEL 6 and Windows versions prior to 2019 require an update before upgrading to V24. Older DB engines such as Oracle must be updated to at least version 19c and MS SQL to 2019. The agents for Windows and Unix will only support 64-bit from V24 and are now Java-based. This enables the use of Unicode and brings additional features such as SMPTS support for secure file transfer.

AWI improvements and Automation Engine changes

Numerous improvements have been made to AWI, particularly in terms of accessibility and keyboard support. Philipp presents further highlights in a separate video. V24 brings some challenges for the Automation Engine. Due to the introduction of Unicode encoding, a conventional update is necessary and a zero-downtime upgrade is not possible. Passwords are now encoded with two leading dashes instead of hyphens and the REST API has been expanded to include additional endpoints. If you use CyberArk as a password vault, you may be happy to hear that as of V24, CyberArk's REST API can be used for the Automic connection instead of the local client.
