UP12 - UTF-8 DB Migration Action Pack (Tutorial)

Automic V24 is just around the corner. This version brings a long-awaited feature - UTF8 support. You can prepare your database for the new version today by converting it to UTF8. To make this task easier, Broadcom offers an Action Pack. How does it work? How much downtime is required for the process? Marcin answers these and other questions in this post.

UTF-8 Database Migration with the Automic Action Pack – Explained in This Tutorial

With the release of Automic Automation Version 24, UTF-8 becomes mandatory. If your database is still using ANSI encoding, you’ll need to migrate to UTF-8 to continue working with the new version. To support this critical transition, Broadcom has released a dedicated UTF-8 Migration Action Pack. In this tutorial, Marcin explains how it works and what you should be aware of.

Why you must migrate to UTF-8 now

Starting with V24, the Automation Engine requires UTF-8 encoded databases – no exceptions. This applies to:

  • All new installations
  • Upgrades from previous versions
  • On-premises and Kubernetes (AAKE) environments

Delaying the migration can cause compatibility issues or failed upgrades.

What’s inside the Action Pack?

The UTF-8 Migration Action Pack by Broadcom offers a structured and largely automated way to migrate your database. It includes:

  • Step-by-step processes for conversion
  • Automated checks for object and character set issues
  • Support for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server

This gives you a controlled and repeatable approach – without having to build your own solution from scratch.

How much downtime should you expect?

Migration to UTF-8 requires planned downtime. While the Action Pack automates a lot, it’s still a disruptive process:

  • Downtime depends on the size and structure of your database
  • Expect several hours of limited availability
  • In the video, Marcin shares typical time estimates and tips to minimize impact
