RS01 - REST API theory

REST APIs are everywhere. You use them when you scroll the feed on Twitt... X, buy a train ticket or check how much money you have. Automic offers the option of calling external REST APIs and being called in the same way. But how does it actually work? What cogs make it run? This is the first video in the REST learning path that covers this subject matter in detail.

In this video, you will learn the basics of REST APIs. It is therefore particularly interesting that Automic not only enables external REST APIs to be controlled via jobs, but also provides its own REST API that can be called externally. An API, or Application Programming Interface, is an interface that enables different software applications to exchange information with each other. Think of it like a bridge between buildings that enables the secure and efficient transport of information. In this case, the "buildings" are the different software applications. Why are APIs so important for modern software development? They play a central role by allowing developers to build on existing code and services instead of developing everything from scratch. APIs facilitate the integration of functions and data into new applications and promote interoperability between different systems. REST, which stands for "Representational State Transfer", is a style of architecture for the development of network applications. It defines rules and conventions for the exchange of data over the network. REST is based on six key principles, including client-server architecture, resource representation, HTTP verbs, statelessness, representation and hypermedia. To ensure that only authorised users can access API resources, there are various authentication methods such as API tokens, OAuth and HTTP Basic Authentication. The exact authentication depends on the API and the security requirements. For further details on the Automic REST API and how to use it, we recommend the official Automic documentation in OpenAPI format available on the Automic documentation page.
