Understanding user roles in Automic: A key factor for efficient job scheduling

Introduction to Automic roles

In any organisation that uses Automic Workload Automation, certain user roles play a central role. These roles are crucial to ensure the continuous operation and efficiency of automated processes. In this video tutorial, we'll walk you through the classic roles in Automic so you can better understand how they might work in your organisation.

The operator: the monitoring centre

Let's start with the Operator role. The operator is typically located in a control centre and has the task of monitoring running processes. They can skip tasks, set delays or monitor critical workflows more closely. In the event of problems, the operator intervenes, restarts processes and calls in specialists if necessary. This makes him a key figure in maintaining system stability.

The designer: the creative developer

The role of the designer at Automic is similar to that of a developer or programmer. The designer creates tasks, integrates them into workflows and determines their order of execution. They also decide whether a workflow should be blocked or cancelled in the event of an error. In addition, the designer uses AE-Script, a special scripting language in Automic, to refine the automation solutions and make them more intelligent.

The administrator: the guardian of the infrastructure

The administrator plays a critical role in the maintenance of the Automic infrastructure and system components. He is responsible for the installation of the Automic system, including the database and the web interface, as well as for setting up distributed agents. These agents enable Automic to start tasks on different platforms such as Linux, Windows or SAP systems. In the event of performance problems or other technical difficulties, the administrator analyses and rectifies the causes.

The application manager: The internal customer

Although the application manager does not usually have direct access to Automic, their automation requirements play a decisive role. He is the ‘customer’ within the company whose tasks and workflows must be implemented by the designers in Automic. They have insight into the progress of the processes, but cannot actively intervene in the workflows.

Conclusions and role allocation

In smaller Automic environments, all active roles are often combined in a central team, whereas in larger companies, decentralised development may be preferred, with each department developing and running its own jobs. This demonstrates the flexibility and adaptability of Automic to different organisational structures. Regardless of how these roles are distributed in your organisation, understanding their functions and responsibilities is critical to the successful implementation and management of Automic solutions.
