Let’s automate S1E2: Send Signals with REST

In the second episode of “Let’s Automate—Triggering Automic Jobs from Outside,” we’re moving away from the file system and sending signals directly to Automic via the AE REST interface. No agent, no polling, no waiting—just an HTTP request. You’ll learn how to use the REST API to trigger processing in Automic, resolve external dependencies with Signal Jobs, and send feedback back to the triggering system. I’ll also show you the Scripts endpoint, which you can use to perform SYNC actions and create VARA entries without activating a single object. If you’ve watched the first episode on trigger files, you’ll quickly realize: Both methods have their place—and it’s worth knowing both!

You’ve completed the Designer Learning Path and are heading into your day-to-day work. Now you’re realizing: In theory, theory is practice, but in practice, theory is just theory. So how can you effectively meet the demands of a designer’s daily routine? That’s where our “Let’s Automate” format comes in to help. Because here, it’s all about hands-on practice, not the basics! We’ll build on the Automic knowledge you’ve acquired in the Designer and Scripting Learning Paths. For Netflix and binge-watching fans, it’s presented in a practical “season” format. Each season focuses on a specific topic, and the episodes showcase different approaches to tackling that topic. You can simply watch or actively participate in one of our Designer Labs!

The first season of “Let’s Automate” focuses on how an external system can send a signal to Automic, triggering an action within Automic. Such requirements often come from business departments and can take various forms. In the second episode, we’ll look at how external systems can send signals to Automic via the AE-REST interface—without any files or agents. Instead, a single HTTP request is all it takes to, for example, start workflows, set VARA entries, or activate objects. This method is particularly useful when quick responses are needed. We’ll show you which endpoints are relevant, how authentication works, and what you should keep in mind during implementation—including the pros and cons compared to traditional methods like trigger files.

I hope you’ll join us! Let’s automate!
