DS16 - Events (EVNT)

Imagine being able to trigger your automation processes automatically as soon as a file arrives or a new entry appears in a database! That’s exactly what event objects are for! With event objects in Automic, you can react to events rather than working rigidly to a schedule. In this course, you’ll learn about the most important event types: time events for time-based triggers, file events for file system monitoring, and database events for SQL-based triggers.

Event objects are your sensors for event-driven automation in Automic!

In this course you'll learn how to react to conditions with events instead of only working on a schedule. In this course you will learn:
  • What event objects are and how the two execution levels (EVNT and !EVNT) relate to each other
  • How time events (TIME) work - for time-based triggers or delays
  • How file events (FILE) work - for filesystem monitoring and file arrival
  • How database events (DB) work - for SQL-based condition checks
  • The different check modes: one-time, repeated, or repeated until the first match
  • How to use events both standalone and within workflows
You will learn not only the technical basics but also practical use cases: from file monitoring for interface processes to time-based delays in workflows. An important concept is the hierarchy: an active event (EVNT) continuously checks the condition. On each match a !EVNT is started as a child execution, which can then trigger further actions (e.g., jobs or workflows). In the details window you can see exactly how often checks have been performed, how often something was found, and when the next check will take place. You will also learn important details about the configuration options: whether a one-time check, repeated checks, or checking until the first match - depending on the use case you choose the appropriate mode! At the end you have the opportunity to carry out exercises in one of our Automic Designer-Labs using objects created specifically for the course. When you're ready, a multiple-choice final test awaits you. If you pass it, you will receive a certificate – the perfect proof of your new skills! This course is ideal for anyone who already has basic knowledge of Automic and wants to build their automations in an event-driven way.
