Convert C_PERIODS to PERIOD objects

A recurring execution is quick to start—and just as quick to forget. Its definition exists exclusively within the running C_PERIOD container; it is not versioned and cannot be transported. When someone terminates such an execution, you might find yourself wondering how to restart it. But there has been a solution for this for quite some time: PERIOD objects! However, when dealing with many C_PERIODs, managing the associated PERIOD objects can become tedious. Our tool helps you with this. It retrieves the recurring executions via the REST interface and creates PERIOD objects from them. In this post, I’ll show you how the tool works.

Do you know this? A colleague starts a workflow „recurring“, sets interval, time window and weekdays and is satisfied. Months later a maintenance window arrives, all executions are stopped – and nobody knows anymore with which settings these executions actually ran. Or you have to deploy the same automation on a second environment and must manually restart each recurring execution.

The reason is quickly explained: an ad hoc started recurring execution is in itself not an object. Its definition lives exclusively in the running C_PERIOD container. It is not versioned, not transportable, not findable in the object list – and with the end of the execution it is gone.

With the tool Periodicator we turn the tables. It reads the running C_PERIOD executions of a client via the REST interface, translates each definition into an equivalent PERIOD object and, if desired, creates it directly in the client. From a fleeting schedule becomes an object that you can version, transport, find again in the AWI and reuse.

In the full PEM article you can download the tool and you will also learn:

  • how to start with a risk-free simulation

  • which parameters the tool recognizes and why a name prefix is required when writing back

  • how the Periodicator handles executions that already have a maintained PERIOD object

  • which settings cannot be transferred one-to-one into a PERIOD object – and where they go instead

  • which accompanying Automic objects are supplied to specifically start and stop the recurring executions
