Learn more about Automic objects and workflows

In this Designer storylab, you will create your (possibly) first Automic objects and link them in a workflow. Using a fictitious scenario, you will help the research department of the CanPuncher company to develop a workflow that will be responsible for exporting, transferring and importing design data into the archive system.

For the file export, we will use a Linux script that is executed via an OS job. Of course, the script has a few surprises in store. Let me just say: errors are possible! But don't worry, the lab will guide you through troubleshooting, where you will also come into contact with Automic's internal variables for the first time.

You will then move on to the file transfer object. You will create a new file transfer object that copies a previously exported file from one agent to another, activating certain settings such as deleting the source file.

The final step, importing the file, is again done using a Unix job object. Here it is important to set the correct parameter to import the transferred file.

Once you have successfully created and tested the three objects, the exciting task is to link them together in a workflow. You create a workflow object and drag all the previously created objects into it to turn them into workflow tasks. You define the order in which they will be executed. Of course, the workflow needs to be tested. You will do this by using different logical data to influence the behaviour of the workflow tasks.

As a final step, you will learn how to set up a scheduler to start the workflow you have created at a specific time. Using process monitoring, you will then be able to monitor the activity of the scheduler and the status of the started workflow in real time.
